Why I built PlayTicTac

I’m a solo developer building the Tic Tac Toe site I kept wishing existed: fast enough for one spontaneous game, thoughtful enough to come back to, and useful far beyond a single 3×3 board.

the story behind the site

It started with a very small frustration

I wanted to play a quick game of Tic Tac Toe. Not create an account. Not install an app. Not close pop-ups or wait through a long introduction. Just open a board, make the first move, and share a simple moment with another person.

That should have been easy. Yet many game pages felt louder and more complicated than the game itself. Some stopped at a basic board. Others treated Tic Tac Toe as disposable—a few clicks, then nothing more to discover. I kept thinking that such a familiar little game deserved a calmer and more complete home.

So I began building PlayTicTac on my own. What started as one clean 3×3 board slowly grew into computer play, two-player games, private online rooms, larger boards, Ultimate Tic Tac Toe, tactical puzzles, a position solver, printable activities, classroom tools, and carefully researched guides. Every new feature came from the same question: does this help someone play, understand, teach, or create with the game?

I am still one developer, learning and improving the site one decision at a time. That makes the work personal. A confusing button matters. A slow page matters. A child finding a puzzle, a teacher printing a board, or two friends sharing a quick rematch matters. PlayTicTac is my reminder that a small idea, treated with care, can become genuinely useful.

the problem it solves

A simple game should be simple to enjoy

PlayTicTac removes the friction between wanting to play and making the first move. The site brings free browser-based Tic Tac Toe into one focused place: games against the computer, two-player play on one device, and private online games with friends.

It also solves a second problem: most Tic Tac Toe sites end when the round ends. Here, you can learn strategy, solve positions, try larger variants, print an activity, or turn the grid into a math game, quiz, spelling task, or student choice board.

Play without a process

No account, installation, countdown, or long setup. Open the page and the board is ready. A one-minute game should not ask for five minutes of your attention first.

More than one small board

Play classic 3×3, challenge the computer, share a screen, create a private online room, explore 4×4 and 5×5, or learn the deeper rules of Ultimate Tic Tac Toe.

A grid that can teach and create

Puzzles, strategy guides, a solver, printable boards, math games, quizzes, and choice-board tools turn the familiar grid into something useful for players, parents, teachers, and curious builders.

what you can do here

One home for playing, learning, and creating with Tic Tac Toe

PlayTicTac is a free browser-based Tic Tac Toe website for casual players, friends, families, students, teachers, and developers learning game logic. Nothing needs to be installed, and the main game modes do not require an account.

Play your way

Start with the classic 3×3 game, play against the computer, share two-player mode, or invite a friend to a private online room.

Go beyond 3×3

Explore 4×4, 5×5, and Ultimate Tic Tac Toe, then use tactical puzzles and the minimax solver to understand difficult positions.

Teach or make something

Create printable boards, math practice, quizzes, spelling activities, custom templates, and classroom choice boards. The PlayTicTac blog explains strategy, history, mathematics, coding, and teaching ideas.

The board is waiting.
